Madilyn Gavin: A Future Forestry Leader in the Making

Who knew mentoring could be so rewarding?

Forestry Australia’s nine-month mentoring program was designed to build meaningful connections across the forestry sector by pairing experienced professionals with emerging leaders. While the program offers a structured framework—exploring themes like goal setting, time management, professional networking, and values-based leadership—the true magic often happens in the relationships that form.

For me, that magic came in the form of Madilyn Gavin, a passionate young forester based in Tumut. Coming into the program, I assumed that after more than 30 years in the forest and wood products industry, I would have plenty to offer. What I didn’t expect was how much I would gain from the experience myself.

Madilyn and I began catching up online every fortnight for half an hour—conversations that quickly became a highlight. Her enthusiasm for her work and her commitment to learning were infectious. Watching a young woman thrive in an industry she truly loves reignited my own sense of purpose. Madilyn reminded me of the power of fresh energy, curiosity, and drive.

Our mentoring journey became even more special when we finally met in person at the AFPA Dinner in Canberra. As a Canberra local, Madilyn had family in town, making it the perfect opportunity to introduce her to key industry figures, including Responsible Wood’s Matt de Jong and Forestry Australia CEO Jacquie Martin. Seeing her confidently engage with leaders in the sector felt like watching the next generation step proudly into its future.

A huge thank you to Forestry Australia, ForestWorks, and especially to Madilyn for making this experience so meaningful. Our industry thrives when we support and elevate emerging professionals—and there’s no doubt in my mind that one day, Madilyn will be the one mentoring others.
