Reframing the Future: The Future Framing Initiative and the FTMA Conference

Driving change through collaboration

Australia’s construction sector is facing mounting pressure from housing demand, cost escalation, labour constraints and sustainability targets. Together, these challenges are sharpening the focus on how buildings are designed and delivered, and on how lightweight timber framing can continue to perform effectively in a changing construction environment.

The Future Framing Initiative (FFI) is an industry-led collaborative project managed by Forest & Wood Products Australia (FWPA). It aims to improve the conditions for greater use of lightweight timber framing in mid-rise construction across Australia.

The initiative focuses on removing unnecessary regulatory barriers (red tape), reducing design and construction costs, and enabling a broader range of building types and heights (up to 15 metres) to be delivered using timber framing systems. Progress has continued steadily in recent months, supported by strong engagement across the supply chain.

A key milestone was the Annual Reference Group Workshop held in March, where industry participants were updated on progress to date and helped shape the next stages of work. The workshop reinforced the value of better alignment in delivering practical, industry driven outcomes.

Supporting modern construction methods

A major focus of the initiative is supporting Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), including prefabrication and offsite manufacturing. These methods are increasingly important as the industry responds to labour shortages, cost pressures and demand for faster, more reliable delivery of housing.
“Timber framing is well suited to modern construction methods,” Mr Dunn notes. “By aligning standards and design approaches with how frames and trusses are actually being manufactured and installed, the industry can improve efficiency and reduce friction across the build process.”

This work is particularly relevant for frame and truss manufacturers, where clearer design rules and simplified compliance pathways can translate directly to production efficiencies and improved outcomes on site.

Industry insight at the FTMA Conference

The Future Framing Initiative will feature prominently at this year’s FTMA Conference – At the Crossroads: Reframing for Growth.
Andrew Dunn will take part in the panel session “Building the Future of Lightweight Timber Framing,” sharing insight into standards modernisation, research priorities and the importance of collaboration in driving industry led change.

Equally important will be the opportunity for members to talk directly with peers across the conference floor. Many organisations represented at the event are already engaged with, or closely following, the Future Framing Initiative. These conversations offer practical, on the ground insight into how the initiative’s objectives relate to manufacturing operations, design coordination and construction delivery.
