FTMA Australia Welcomes WA Housing Innovation Fund Investment in Offsite Timber Manufacturing

The Frame and Truss Manufacturers Association of Australia (FTMA Australia) has welcomed the Cook Government’s $49 million Housing Innovation Fund, praising the strong recognition of offsite prefabrication and timber manufacturing as critical solutions to Western Australia’s housing and construction challenges. 

FTMA CEO Kersten Gentle said the announcement was a major step forward for the building industry, particularly for timber frame and truss manufacturers investing in modern methods of construction.

“This is a landmark investment in the future of housing delivery in Western Australia,” Mrs Gentle said.
“The Cook Government has recognised that offsite prefabrication is not only faster and more efficient, but also safer for workers and better for the environment.”

Several timber manufacturing businesses secured funding to expand automated prefabricated timber framing and modular construction capabilities, helping deliver more homes sooner while supporting local manufacturing jobs and regional economies.

Mrs Gentle said the investment was particularly timely as Western Australia prepares for the introduction of strengthened fall from heights legislation later this year.

“With the new fall from heights regulations due to commence in September, this announcement demonstrates strong leadership from the Cook Government in supporting safer building practices,” she said.

“Over the past 20 years, 17 West Australians have tragically lost their lives due to falls from heights in residential construction. Increasing the use of offsite prefabrication means more work can be completed safely at ground level in controlled factory environments, significantly reducing risks on site.”

FTMA said prefabricated timber wall frames, roof trusses and modular systems help minimise time working at height, improve quality control, reduce construction delays and accelerate housing delivery.
Mrs Gentle also highlighted the environmental benefits of timber construction.

“Timber homes store carbon for life, making timber one of the most important materials in the transition to lower-carbon construction. This investment supports a housing future that is faster, safer and more sustainable.”
