ACT Government Delegates Gain First-Hand Insight into Timber Prefabrication and Housing Solutions

This month, FTMA was pleased to welcome delegates from across the ACT Government, including representatives from the Suburban Land Agency, housing, infrastructure, building surveying, sustainability and policy teams, for a tour of several leading frame and truss manufacturing facilities.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for policymakers to see first-hand how Australia's timber frame and truss sector operates, and to gain a deeper understanding of the role off-site prefabrication can play in addressing both housing supply and sustainability challenges.

 

Delegates visited CRT, Dahlsens Truss Me and Universal Trusses, where they were guided through manufacturing facilities and engaged in discussions around production processes, investment requirements, workforce development, capacity planning and the realities of delivering housing at scale.
Throughout the tour, manufacturers openly shared insights into the opportunities and challenges facing the sector, while demonstrating the sophisticated technologies, quality assurance systems and highly skilled workforce that underpin modern timber prefabrication.

Importantly, the visit highlighted a key message for government stakeholders: the frame and truss industry is not an emerging solution waiting to be developed - it is an established, mature and highly capable industry that is ready to help deliver the housing outcomes Australia urgently needs.
As governments across the country pursue ambitious housing targets, off-site timber frame and truss manufacturing represents one of the most immediate and scalable solutions available. The sector already possesses extensive manufacturing capability, established supply chains, proven systems and the ability to rapidly increase housing delivery through efficient prefabrication processes.

 

The tour also explored the broader timber and forestry supply chain, providing delegates with greater insight into the sustainability benefits of timber construction. As a renewable resource that stores carbon throughout its service life, responsibly sourced timber offers significant environmental advantages while supporting regional economies, local jobs and Australia's transition towards lower-emissions construction practices.
